Fishing Port Charlotte and Boat Punta Gorda: One more way to enjoy your boating day

Boating and Fishing in Port Charlotte and Boat Punta Gorda

For those who love to boat Port Charlotte and the surrounding areas, you’ll be happy to know that Charlotte County waters are perfect for fishing Port Charlotte, too. Southwest Florida is an angler’s dream location. Whether you’re looking for saltwater or freshwater fishing, Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda and other local areas all boast dozens of great fishing spots. Here are just a few good saltwater spots to help get you started.

Saltwater Boating Locations
Along the Myakka River and Charlotte Harbor

  • Cattle Dock Point is located on the west bank of the Myakka River and is a great redfish spot. It is at the mouth of the Harbor where Myakka and Peace River fork (Peace river to the right, Myakka to the left).
  • 14 Foot Hole is a great place to find shark, tarpon and Cobia. To find the hole, you will need to move NW towards shore away from Marker #8 (which is located just south of the Harbor). Try to give other boats at least 200 ft. clearance.
  • The Holes of Charlotte Harbor are legendary for those with fishing Port Charlotte area experience. The three holes are: 20 Foot Hole, Middle Hole, and Pirate Harbor Hole/ Reef (a man-made reef by locals who have purposefully sunk various items and boats over the years). These locations are great for shark, mackerel and tarpon fishing. From Green Marker #1, the holes are located slightly SW and NW of the marker.

Fishing Punta Gorda Reservoir offers some of your best locations for freshwater fishing. Because of how shallow many freshwater areas are, you may need to use a kayak, canoe, jet ski or smaller, shallow bottom boat. The area’s many local parks provide public boat ramps. Just be sure to call ahead to verify water depths and other boat navigation questions.

Fishing Punta Gorda and other local Charlotte County waters promises the chance to reel in tarpon, Snook, and redfish, as well as some other big game fishing. Always be sure to check the FWC website for information on restricted species, licensing requirements, and other important information.

Information on lower Myakka navigation required

Can anyone tell me if the Myakka is navigable from the Gulf Port Charlotte end up as far as River Road communities and / or Snook Haven.  If so what depth is the channel?  I am trying to find a chart on line that would show this but so far have failed to find one. Thanks for any help.MichaelSee More
