Boating in Charlotte County | Boat Port Charlotte | Punta Gorda & more

Before I moved to Florida I never thought about kayaking but since I’ve been living here, I’ve found it be an amazing sport. It’s fun, exciting and some of the best exercise you’ll ever get. This is a hobby that requires you to be physically fit or you’re not going to get very far. You should also be a good swimmer because you never know when you’re going to get turned upside down. Of course, you need to learn all the safety rules and always were a life vest but being a good swimmer will help you feel more confident and prepared.

Kayaking is a lot a different from going out on a boat. It’s a small vessel and you’ll need to use the paddles to get from point A to point B so it’s important to take the time to learn about the kayak of your choice, since there are different styles and sizes available. Learn how to use the safety straps so you don’t end up losing your paddles and other necessities in the water especially if you flip over. You’ll have a hard enough time getting the kayak turned back over and getting back in it without having to swim for your gear that’s floating away.

Now that you know all about being safe and using the kayak correctly, I would recommend learning a little something about the ocean, if you don’t know a lot already. One of the first things that I found to be the most surprising is how fast a storm can appear. If you’re not paying attention, you may find yourself too far out in the water with not enough time to get back to shore. Therefore, the first thing you should do when it comes to weather is check out the forecast before venturing out and always keep your eyes open. You should also learn about rip tides and how the oceans current and waves can affect your vessel.

I also advise that you never go kayaking alone. Even if you have a one man vessel you can get together with friends who also enjoy the sport and all go out together. Inform someone onshore of your plans in case you run into trouble so there will be someone that can report you missing and let the proper authorities know where you were planning to go. Were reflective clothing, carry along some form of communication and have a great time kayaking on the ocean.

By now most people/boaters have probably heard that SW Florida only has a slim chance of getting
it's beautiful beaches polluted by the oil spilled off the LA coast.
We recently returned from a cruise to the Dry Tortugas and the Keys and can happily report
that we did not see any tar balls or oil slicks along the way.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that it stays that way.
Happy boating !!!

Information on lower Myakka navigation required

Can anyone tell me if the Myakka is navigable from the Gulf Port Charlotte end up as far as River Road communities and / or Snook Haven.  If so what depth is the channel?  I am trying to find a chart on line that would show this but so far have failed to find one. Thanks for any help.MichaelSee More
